VBSV Brings in New International Team;
South African National Baseball Team

   VERO BEACH, Fla.— Vero Beach Sports Village (VBSV) continues to bring in new international teams by having the South Africa National Baseball team come for a week-long training camp starting September 12.

VBSV’s relationship with Major League Baseball™ (MLB) and other international sports teams have brought the South African team to train at the sports complex. The team will be preparing for the qualifying tournament for the World Baseball Classic in Jupiter starting on the 19th.

The South African National Team will be joining other national teams from Israel, Spain and France.  The qualifying tournament is based on a modified double elimination format with the winner being the pool qualifier who will participate in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. South Africa’s first game will be against Israel at 7pm on September 19 in Jupiter.

Only the top four teams from the qualification rounds, along with the top 12 teams at the 2009 World Baseball Classic (Australia, China, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and the United States) will qualify for the World Baseball Classic in 2013.

The team is managed by Rick Magnante, current manager of the Vermont Lake Monsters. The team is coached by Craig Lefferts, former relief pitcher for the Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers and California Angels.

Since the re-opening of the complex in 2010, VBSV has hosted the National baseball teams from China and Italy as well as the SK Wyverns Korean Professional Baseball team.
